NQ Trade Journal — 2026-09-01 — 1m SDTV → -4σ Run → OTE/CE Retrace

Core observation
For this SDTV framework, the SDTV levels are always drawn from the high to low of the 1-minute candle at the session open. For the RTH session, that means the 9:30am 1-minute candle. For any other session open, use that session-open 1-minute candle the same way.
At/after the regular session open, the 1-minute SDTV framework from the 9:30am opening candle high → low ran toward the -4 standard-deviation band, pushed a little past it, then rotated back up into a retracement zone measured from the 2:00am high to the 9:30am low.
The retrace carried into the OTE / Consequent Encroachment area, described as a little past the 50% level of that 2am-high → 9:30am-low range.
What could have been done better
1. Treat the open dump into -4σ as an exhaustion / reaction-location first, not a chase-short
Once price stretched into or slightly beyond the -4σ SDTV band on the 1m open sequence, the better read was:
- high downside extension already printed,
- shorts entering late were vulnerable,
- watch for reclaim / failed continuation,
- prepare for mean reversion back into the imbalance/retrace zone.
Lesson: Do not short late directly into a -4σ extension unless continuation confirms cleanly after a weak bounce. The better trade is often the reversal/retrace once sellers fail to extend.
2. Anchor the retrace from the 2am high to the 9:30am low
The useful measurement was:
- Swing high: 2:00am high
- Swing low: 9:30am low
- Retrace zone: 50% / Consequent Encroachment through OTE area
Price rotating back into that zone gave a cleaner upside target after the open flush.
Lesson: For overnight-to-open displacement, keep the 2am high → 9:30am low fib/range anchored and visible. If the open leg exhausts at SDTV extremes, the 50%/CE and OTE zone becomes the natural retracement magnet.
3. Better playbook sequence
Long-watch setup:
- Only if: price trades into/through the -4σ SDTV band, then fails to continue lower and reclaims a 1m structure level / breakdown candle.
- Entry idea: reclaim after failed low continuation, ideally with a higher-low or strong 1m close back inside SDTV structure.
- Stop: below the failed extension low / below the -4σ overshoot low.
- TP1: midpoint / Consequent Encroachment of the 2am high → 9:30am low range.
- TP2: OTE pocket if reclaim has strength.
- Cancel: if price accepts below the -4σ extension and every bounce rejects under the breakdown level.
4. Short setup should have waited for retrace, not extension
If looking for shorts after the overnight/open drop, the cleaner short location was not the -4σ low. It was the retrace back into:
- CE / 50%+ area,
- OTE pocket,
- prior breakdown / supply if aligned.
Lesson: After a large open displacement, shorting is cleaner from the retrace/resistance zone, not from the statistical exhaustion band.
Rule to test going forward
When NQ makes a strong RTH-open displacement into the 1m SDTV -4σ band or slightly beyond, measure the range from the key overnight high — today, the 2:00am high — to the 9:30am low. If price fails to continue below the -4σ extension and reclaims 1m structure, target CE / just beyond 50%, then OTE. Avoid chasing fresh shorts at the -4σ extension unless there is clear acceptance below it.

Important caveat
This note is based on hindsight/user observation and should be converted into testable forward rules before being treated as an edge. Need future examples with exact timestamps, entry trigger, stop, MFE/MAE, and whether CE/OTE was reached before invalidation.
